Charity liquid diet success

Shrewsbury-based Charity Omega care for life has raised even more funds to help local sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and their families; Omega supporter Leena Cowell followed a sponsored liquid diet for one month, bringing in over £700 for the cause so far.

Leena, a keen walker from Craven Arms, said: “I am moved by the plight of patients with MND and I just wanted to do something to raise awareness of the difficulties faced by caring families. I can only imagine how tough it must be for MND sufferers.”

Food lover Leena switched to soups, smoothies and other liquid-only meals on August 19th, after consulting with her GP. Four weeks later, she celebrated her success by devouring a roast chicken. Leena, pictured here enjoying a follow-up helping of tasty solids, also raised money to support the Omega MND initiative by taking part in the 2011 Long Mynd Hike.

The Omega MND support team is seeking personal donations, fundraising partners, and sponsorship from successful businesses to support more patients and their families. Sufferers are provided with tablet computers and speech synthesizing software, enabling those who cannot speak to communicate with their families and clinicians. It costs approximately £700 for each package consisting of an Apple iPad with Proloquo2Go (and other assistive software), accessories and on-going support.

Omega Development Director Tom Memery said: “We have been inspired by families affected by Motor Neurone Disease. The Omega team will continue to respond quickly to requests for support on behalf of MND patients in Shropshire and Montgomeryshire, Powys.” Omega hopes to provide more support in other areas; Mr Memery continued: “We are working hard to extend the impact of this important initiative. We are grateful for the help we have already received from generous donors, delivery partners and dedicated, highly-skilled volunteers.”

MND, also known as Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rare, progressive, neurological disorder without cure. Diagnosis can be delayed by several months after symptoms emerge and around half of those affected die within three to four years of diagnosis. Losing the ability to speak is common in advanced cases.
