The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) latest State of Care report revealed many examples of good and outstanding care alongside significant difference in quality for adults across England, which it claims is unacceptable. The report follows a more rigorous inspection regimen which is intended to give the most thorough understanding of the state of health and social care to date.

The CQC have found that basic safety and leadership are two areas in need of improvement. Partner organisation Skills for Care have published the Social Care Manager’s Handbook to support frontline leaders and TLAP (Think Local Act Personal) has also produced practice guidance to social care leaders and practitioners. The Blue Print for Personalised Care and Support has a section dedicated to leadership skills, and case study examples of staff recruitment, supervision, training and appraisal.
