The British Association of Social Workers (BASW) will be marking Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) with a day of presentations and discussions on the human rights of refugees, how the profession undertakes the specialist nature of this work. There will be speakers and presentations from service users, the statutory, voluntary and specialist providers.  For BASW the theme of HMD 2016 of not standing by fits with the defining  ethics in the profession and the human rights-based approach and they want to link history with current issues and practice. Mindful Gifts CIC opens 1950s shop and room of memories!

Mindful Gifts CIC would like to share some good news with you! We have just moved into our new unique shop on the corner of Church Street / King Street, Darlaston, Walsall (former Darlaston Carpets). The shop offers something for everyone and will roll back many memories for people who remember the 1950s. The shop, furnished 1950s style, contains a mini toy stores selling traditional toys such as spud guns and yoyos. There is a mini sweet store selling everyone’s favourites from the past and grocery stores where you will find household items such as carbolic soap, Camp Coffee and Reckitts Blue. Then step into our living room area where you can enjoy a cuppa out of vintage cups, poured out of our best china teapots! The scullery is where you will find the wash board, flat irons and our best brass ornaments on display on our cosy fire place. For those people with memory issues we have a range of specialist activities on display in our activity room. These can be tried out for their suitability for each individual. Activities include large piece jigsaws and adult colouring books. New gardening courses at Priory Park starts January 2015

Gardening novices can learn from green fingered experts on a new course at Priory Park. Residents with a new year’s resolution to get into the garden more can learn how to care for fruit trees, move plants and even how to build their own fence at new gardening workshops. The monthly two hours sessions will run on Saturdays starting with planting fruit trees and moving plants on 23 January, building a garden fence on 20 February and growing food in containers on 19 March. All sessions run from 10am to 12pm and cost £2.50 For more advanced gardeners, blocks of eight week course starting on Saturday 9 January until Saturday 18 June ran by The Royal Horticultural Society will teach learners the science behind gardening including how plants photosynthesise, how they know when to flower and fruit and how to propagate successfully. This course forms part of the level 2 certificate the principles of plant growth, propagation and development. The eight week course costs £125 with funding available for Dudley residents.
